The Break

So its midnight, and we’re all dead tired. unfortunately, that will probably remove some of the epic that this post truly deserves. Scratch that, all of the epic. Sorry. Anyway, I should probably begin by apologizing for our sparse blogging; spare moments have been tough to find.

The results:
Canada VS Namibia- 3-0
Canada VS Korea- 3-0
Canada VS Palestine- 3-0
Canada VS Pakistan- 2-1

The impromptu topics were about allowing developing countries to prioritize economic development over the environment, and legalizing performance enhancing drugs. We took Korea on in opposition to that motion; it was a close debate, but in the end, the irritating truth prevailed. Against Pakistan we were on prop and it was by far the closest and most dynamic debate we have had as of yet. Highlights included Keenan asking a POI which began with: “Theres just so… much.. WRONG with that that.. NO!”
Anyway, by a very tight margin and after a fantastic debate, justice prevailed and Canada won. That left us with an 8-0 record and 22/24 ballots! How nice!
Its also worth noting that the biggest upset of the last 2 days was Israels defeat of New Zealand.

Anyway, our strong finish put us… wait for it… wait for it…. SECOND PLACE. This means we will be facing the 15th place Irish in the Octofinal tomorrow (now today) morning. Looking at the break, it looks like we have a tough road ahead but we will no doubt be ready for whatever the Irish or any other team can give us.

So i say bring them on!

Night folks!

wow, that is amazing you guys. Have we ever broke this high? Also, has Ireland ever broke that low? Also, nice work beating Pakistan. They are consistently one of my very favourite teams; powerful, no fuss, no mercy types. So it pleases me that you beat them :)
good luck with the octos you guys, and nice work. please keep us posted :)

Yes! Great job! Canada looks set for a glorious triumph. As an added bonus, you guys took down Palestine 3-0! And Israel beat New Zealand! Everything is right and proper in the (debating) world.

Great Job Team Canada! The teams you have beaten so far are not unintelligent nor are they as simple as some may think it’s just that you guys are awesome. Keep it up! Of course it helps to have Tracey Lee as your coach she is the best – thanks to Tracey.

@Stuart: Pakistan is a highly regarded team within the WSDC circuit, and if you see past results, they have always broken quite high and done very well in the break rounds. It helps to know something before blindly criticizing. Furthermore, I think the team has done a laudable job. Canada has split ballots and even lost rounds to countries who you might not expect. I say from this experience, having been a member of the team for two years.

My congratulations to the team on their excellent performance, and their superb accomplishment! Breaking 2nd is certainly impressive. My best wishes for a continued level of success in the break rounds. Your draw is certainly not by any means an easy one, but I have confidence that a team that has shown itself to be of such high quality will be able to defeat the opposition. As a personal bit of advice, though I’m sure Ms. Lee has already imparted it to you, stay calm and cool in the prep room. Though it seems like a bit of platitude, its significance cannot be understated. Focus on the case, and do not get too lost in the fact that it is a break round.

Best wishes, and I hope to hear of Canada emerging victorious over Ireland tomorrow.
